Public education is one of the great promises of this country. But is America keeping that promise? This ABC News program offers a timely report card on the nation’s public education system. Hard hit by state budget cuts in recent years, the system is also under immense pressure from the No Child Left Behind initiative—legislation that demands much of schools but, say critics, provides little funding to help them meet the mandated goals. Visits to a school in Arlington, Massachusetts, and The University of Texas at Austin amply illustrate the hard realities of faculties being slashed and class sizes swelling…and the promise of public education steadily fading.
